How many teams are going to play in the 2026 World Cup? 

FIFA changed the format for the 2026 World Cup to have 12 groups of four teams each instead of 16 groups of three teams each. This means that there will be 48 teams playing in the tournament (up from 32), which the US, Mexico, and Canada will co-host. The change was approved by FIFA’s Council on March 14, 2023, and will increase the total number of games to 104 from 64 in the previous edition in Qatar.
