In a historic turn at the 2023 CMAs, Tracy Chapman’s 1988 hit “>Fast Car,”> given a new lease on life with Luke Combs’ cover, sped past the competition to win Song of the Year. This made Chapman the first Black songwriter ever to snag the award. This win came 35 years after the song’s debut. The CMAs aired on ABC on Nov. 8, 2023, at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. Chapman was not present at the ceremony but sent a prepared statement that presenter Sara Evans read.
